Rheology Control

blank
The control of the rheology particle suspensions is critical to many diverse application areas. Generally speaking, the everyday use of water based materials in the form of pastes and suspensions often rely on having the consistency of the material controlled. The performance and use of these materials thus depends on having the right rheological behaviour.

A similar, but possibly even more critical dependence on rhelogical parameters, is found in many industrial processes. Examples here include the various types of slurry production, as encountered during pumping, milling and spray-drying.

Our lignin-based dispersants are used within a wide range of applications for the purpose of modifying the rheology of dispersed aqueous systems. They offer rheology control primarily in terms of viscosity reduction and prevention of gel formation. Typical applications where our dispersants have an established use for rheology control of reactive systems are: water reduction (plasticisers) in cement- and gypsum-based systems, and for fluid loss control in different oil field applications.

Our products are also used for rheology control of inert systems, such as the ones encountered in agrochemical and dyestuff applications. In these cases, they have proven to be efficient dispersants of aqueous systems for both organic and inorganic particles.

The graph above shows the viscosity as a function of concentration for a slurries of particles of an organic substrate. The slurries contain 1%wt of  lignin dispersant. The large differences in the slurry viscosity demonstrates that the choice of dispersant can have a very strong influence on the processing conditions of a given slurry.
